The State of Superintendency and Gender in New York
A new statewide study examining gender and leadership in New York’s public schools.
October 13, 2026
Women make up the majority of New York’s teacher workforce and principal corps, yet remain significantly underrepresented in the superintendency.

The New York State Association for Women in Administration (NYSAWA) and Women Leading Ed partnered to take a closer look at the data, the leadership pipeline, and the systems and processes that shape who reaches the superintendent’s office.
The study combines statewide quantitative data with the experiences of women education leaders across New York.
